How to pack light for any trip

Packing light is about leaving behind the 'just in case' items, not about owning less. Here is how to cut a bag to the essentials and still arrive ready.

Most people overpack. The average traveller uses a fraction of the clothes they bring, and the extra weight makes every connection harder. Packing light is not a skill — it is a decision you make before you open the bag.

The essentials-only mindset

For every item, ask: will I actually use this, or is it a 'just in case'? The 'just in case' clothes, books and gadgets are the first to go. If you would pack five shirts, pack two and wear one on the plane.

Layering beats variety

Four lightweight layers give you more outfit options than six heavy items. A base layer, a mid-layer and a shell handle most weather better than a suitcase full of season-specific clothes.

Wear your heaviest things

Your coat, boots and heaviest shoes take up the most space. Wear them on the plane, not in the bag. You save room and weight where it matters.

Print a packing list for your trip type on the packing lists page, and tick it as you pack.
